fend|er «FEHN duhr», noun.
1. a guard or protection over the wheel of a car, truck, bicycle, or other wheeled vehicle, that protects the wheel and reduces splashing in wet weather; mudguard.
2. a rope pad or cushion, log, piece of plastic, or rubber tire, put between a boat and a pier, wharf, or other vessel to prevent damage to the side of the boat when docking, towing, or pushing.
3. a metal guard, frame, or screen in front of a fireplace to keep hot coals and sparks from the room.
4. a cowcatcher or other device at the front of a locomotive or streetcar, to reduce injury should an animal or person be struck.
5. Especially British. a metal bar or frame on the front or rear of a locomotive or streetcar, to lessen damage in case of collision.
6. a piece of leather attached to a saddle to protect the rider's legs.
7. anything that protects by being between or keeping something off.
